The Twisted Groove is a weekly radio show on KSFR fm 101.1 Santa Fe airing Saturday eves 10pm to midnight (MT). Spinifex plays a groove-based exploration of the past, present and future of Electronic, Indie, Rare Groove, Funk, Soul, Experimental, and Afro Funk propelling your music pleasures into futurity!
Tonight’s Twisted Groove we explore Kosmische Musik, a genre that emerged from Germany in the early 1970s. This movement bridged the gap between electronic experimentation, avant-garde rock, and proto-punk. These artists were technical pioneers who used analog synthesizers, tape manipulation, and motorik rhythms to redefine the boundaries of modern music. Sounds that went onto influenced modern electronic and alternative genres.
Expect a mix of immersive soundscapes and driving rhythms from the key innovators who shaped this underground scene. You will hear tracks from Neu!, Faust, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Guru Guru, Popol Vuh, Can, Deuter and more

For tonight’s Twisted Groove, I’m diving deep into the dusty corners of my collection and resurfacing a selection of classic old-school trip-hop. These are tracks pulled straight from the archives—moody, textured, and steeped in that signature late-night vibe.
This set is a nod to the early days of Twisted Groove, channeling the raw, immersive energy that defined those first years. You will hear tracks from Hooverphonic, Sneaker Pimps, U.N.K.L.E., Massive Attack, Cibo Matto, Baxter, Everything But The Girl, Olive, Portishead, Bowery Electric, Hector Zazou, Bjork and more.
Tonight on Twisted Groove, I’m featuring International Anthem, the boundary-defying record label out of Chicago, Illinois. My deep dive into their catalog was sparked by the most recent Tortoise release.
While Tortoise is a legendary Chicago band primarily associated with the Thrill Jockey label, International Anthem features many of its members and shares that same Chicago experimental DNA.
Listen for a variety of Ambient, Post-rock, Electronic, and ExperimentalJazz, including tracks from their IA11 series. This series celebrates International Anthem’s eleventh anniversary by reissuing foundational catalog releases from their earliest years.

Tonight’s Twisted Groove I will celebrate the life of Ken Downie whom was the founding member of the pioneering Sheffield electronic group The Black Dog. Ken passed away just last month, December 20th. He along with his original band mates (Ed Handley and Andy Turner, known as Plaid) helped define/create what is now known as IDM. Their first full length came out in 1993 on Warp Records helping to define that label, with an EP out before that in 1989. Ground breaking stuff! The Black Dog has just released the record Loud Ambient in November 2025, being Ken’s last. I’ll start the evening with a track from that and play releases from throughout Ken’s career. Tune in on KSFR 10p to midnight MDT 101.1 fm or KSFR dot org for a unique auditory adventure. Radio streaming link in comments.

Expect a wild, festive spectrum featuring: Bjork, Sun Ra, Wolf Alice, Khruangbin, Esquivel, T. Rex, The Zombies, The Greedy Bastards, Iggy Pop, Slade, Man or Astro-man?, Grandaddy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Shonen Knife, Pink Floyd, The Monkees, Mike Oldfield and more. I had 48 hours to prepare for a last-minute Punk Rock set before the legendary band X. I was coming off of a lingering cold and hadn’t performed live in a significant amount of time. I was determined to create a vinyl-eccentric set that would complement both X and the energy of their crowd.
.
I arrived at the venue at 5:20 PM, and I was met with a series of technical glitches and faulty unprepared equipment. This delayed progress, and by the time the turntables and mixer were functional, it was past 7 PM and I was forced to take the stage. Unfamiliar with the mixer, I had to quickly learn how to operate it while navigating the dim stage lights with a flashlight.
.
Despite these challenges, I managed to pull off a set that I’m proud of. While one channel of the recording experienced intermittent issues, I painstakingly edited the digital file to the best of my ability. Here is the result.

Tonight’s Twisted Groove I will celebrate the life of Steve Albini who passed away last week. Albini sometimes had a cantankerous demeanor but he held strongly to his core values. He refused to take royalties on albums he worked on (a rare stance in the music industry). I will play tracks from his bands, bands he loved and bands he produced or, the way he would put it, engineered.
